New Farewell Room on the Oncology Ward Offers Families a Place to Say Goodbye with Dignity

Jihlava Hospital is continuing to refurbish its farewell rooms, which allow families to say goodbye to deceased patients with dignity and in peace. A new farewell room has now been opened on the Oncology Department, marking a further step in the care of patients and their loved ones in the final moments of life.

New Farewell Room on the Oncology Ward Offers Families a Place to Say Goodbye with Dignity

The farewell room is where a patient is taken after death so that the family can spend their last moments together in a private and sensitively designed setting. The room was designed with an emphasis on a calm atmosphere, privacy and respect for the emotions of the bereaved. The interior is tastefully furnished and complemented by symbolic elements that help create a dignified and peaceful atmosphere.

Families can thus accompany their loved ones for the last time in an environment that offers them the calm and privacy they need, while being as separate as possible from the hospital's day-to-day operations.

"On the Oncology Department we meet patients and their families in what are often very difficult life situations. We wanted to create a space where they can say goodbye to their loved one in peace and privacy. We believe a dignified environment is an important part of the care we provide to patients and their families," says Mgr. Marta Doskočilová, Head Nurse of the Oncology Department.

Among other things, the work of the palliative care consultation team includes accompanying dying patients and supporting their loved ones across the whole hospital. "We decided to create spaces for saying goodbye to the deceased that convey quiet and calm. We believe that being able to say goodbye to someone who has died is an important ritual that can precede natural grieving. At such moments it is good not to rush and to have a space like the one farewell rooms can offer," says Bc. Lucie Váchová, Coordinator of the Palliative Care Consultation Team.

According to the hospital management, a dignified environment for the final farewell is a natural part of comprehensive care for patients and their loved ones. "Our aim is to provide high-quality healthcare without forgetting its human side. When treatment ends and the time comes to say goodbye, families need above all peace, respect and a space where they can be with their loved one. I am glad that we are gradually succeeding in creating such an environment in our hospital," says Ing. Alexander Filip, Director of Jihlava Hospital.
