Comprehensive Cancer Centre – Benefits for the patient

Treatment at a Comprehensive Cancer Centre (KOC) brings the patient major benefits that can directly influence the success of treatment and the quality of life during it. In 2026, the system has also been improved with new positions and services. Here are the most important benefits, set out so that it is clear what the patient gains from them:

1. Assurance of state-of-the-art treatment (so-called centre drugs)

Some modern drugs (immunotherapy, biological therapy) are restricted exclusively to KOCs.

• Benefit for the patient: You have access to drugs you would not get in an ordinary hospital. These drugs are often gentler and more effective because they target cancer cells directly.

2. Oncology care coordinator (new in 2026)

From 2026, the position of coordinator is being introduced as mandatory at KOC centres.

• Benefit for the patient: They have their own “guide” through the system. The coordinator helps them schedule examinations so that they follow on from one another and makes sure they do not wait anywhere unnecessarily. The coordinator helps patients find their way – where to go and what to expect.

3. Multidisciplinary team (MDT) – Two heads are better than one

Results are assessed not by a single doctor in a consulting room, but by a team of experts (oncologist, surgeon, radiologist, pathologist).

• Benefit for the patient: The risk of error is minimised. The team jointly draws up an individual treatment plan tailored to each patient. Patients can be sure that their case has been discussed from all professional perspectives.

4. Cutting-edge technology and precision

KOCs have the latest radiotherapy machines and diagnostic equipment (e.g. PET/CT).

• Benefit for the patient: The diagnosis is made with maximum precision. In addition, modern radiotherapy can track body movements (e.g. during breathing) and target only the tumour, sparing healthy organs.

5. Comprehensive support (Patients are not on their own)

At a KOC, the patient will find specialised support that is often lacking in ordinary hospitals:

• Nutrition specialist: Advises on how to eat so that patients have the strength for treatment.

• Psycho-oncologist: Helps the patient and their family cope with the psychological burden of the disease.

• Palliative team: From the start of treatment, ensures that the patient is free of pain and feels as well as possible.

6. Possibility of clinical trials

CCCs are involved in international research.

• Benefit for the patient: If standard treatment is not working, there is the possibility of gaining access to the newest drugs, which will only reach routine practice in several years' time.
